The Forgotten Road ! Prior to the Honeysuckle Creek Tracking station being built in support of the Apollo Space Missions in the mid 60's, there was an old dirt road ! But a new sealed road was required so this old bit of dirt fell into neglect and has slowly been returning to its original state ever since. Yes, there is an old cement bridge and a few other bits of infrastructure. I quote from my caching log.......
" Quite proud of myself with this one. I think in the rain, the terrain/difficulty rating should go up a tad, especially if the finder is an old fox who is the official world's worst rock scrambler. First two WP were no problems in the light drizzle, I looked nervously up at the first-lookout and wondered whether I should quit while ahead. Nah, I gave it a go. A bit of a shimmy here, a squirm there. Got up to the highest point as per the instructions and couldn't find zip. Ummm good phone coverage here so I rang the MBO but no answer, I then realised I was actually too high and spied the likely spot. Shuffled over and regretted that I was doing it this week, as on Thursday I am getting a third cheek attached to my buttocks for space for all the jabs for my forthcoming work trip to Bangladesh. The extra cheek would have come in handy for braking as I slid down from the WP container. Headed off down the trail and the rain became quite heavy. Still a lovely walk but I really did get drenched. Came around a bend in the trail and my heart sank. There was another massive outcrop of rocks in front. Oh dear, no prize for guessing where the next WP container was going to be. I hung out for a second as the instructions said stick to the path. I was hoping the path would wind around and get me to the top without any drama. Nope, more slithering and sliding, with no real good footholds. A bit of tea tree thought it would take the opportunity to have a go at poking my eyes out ! Good one tea tree but I had the last laugh as I broke the offending branch off - tread lightly is all right up to a point ! WP container was where I thought it would be. The rain stopped and I plugged in the coordinates for the GZ.. Headed off and the drizzle started again. Getting close to the GZ and I wondered whether I had stuffed my calculations. The place didn't seem right but Ooooh, what's that? There is a bit of metalic green, Ooops, almost knelt in the wombat poo but great to find the cache."
My only regret about this walk was it was too wet to break the camera out of my back-pack. The bush was splendid, the sounds of the bubbling brook were so soothing. I ended the day by finding a relatively new cache near the old tracking station but it was hidden amongst the old rubbish tip - not a good look for this nice bit of countryside !
