Boboyan Trig & the Yerrabi walking track

Down Namadgi way, in fact quite close to my last adventure is another delightful little walk.  I think this is a great walk to introduce people to bushwalking in Namadgi as there is a footpad the entire way so one does not have to fight through any undergrowth.  The birdlife sounds terrific (see Facebook for a video where I tried to capture some sounds).

There are 5 distinct zones that this walk will take you through,  The first part is a Peppermint forest that leads down to the swampy grassland (there are little bridges to keep you dry).  You then climb through a Mountain gum/Snow gum forest untill you reach the actual Hill top.  Continuing past the trig on a slightly less defined path will take you down an amazing staircase and out to a wonderful granite viewing platform.

There were 2 caches in the general vicinity and shortly there will be a third.  It is a good road that brings you here with maybe the last 10k being a well-graded dirt road.  However,  care needs to be taken as there are lots of wild-life with no road sense.

I have been dabbling in this hobby since 2008. I do enjoy the aspect of it taking me to places I might not normally visit and make effort that I might not normally make. So today was a big milestone cache and it would incorporate a 20k pedal along fire trails.  To discover the final coordinates, one had to solve a chess problem and to solve the chess problem, one had to find the chess pieces that were scattered around Canberra.

The day started with a drive to the south through Kangaroo infested roads, dodging grader crews and I was ready to leave the car at 10:40.  Had gained a bit of altitude and it was a balmy 3.5 degrees when I started my ride.  Lovely alpine scenery and lots of skippies to keep an eye on me.  Apparently, wild dogs and dingoes are a bit of a problem so I had one of my trekking poles in my panniers that stabbed me every second pedal.  At one stage, I thought I could hear howling but it could just have been my cheeks flapping.  There was an icy wind blowing as well so at the supersonic speedsd I weas pedaling at, wind chill made things very cold.

The standard of fire trail fell away a bit as it became boggy. Some bits I just had to push the bike through.  But, did I mention the lovely scenery?  I passed some old huts that I would visit on my return. Cache was found and I headed back.  I did try to ride through one bog and had a spectacular wipeout.  I hit the ground, just missing the bog and rolled clear.  Very happy that my feet cleared the stirrups cleanly and got up and did a little victory jig.  You'll need to see the video!

I visited a hut which had a cache hidden nearby.  The cache listing mentioned it would be a good place for a snack and coffee so I waited and waited and waited for a waiter to turn up but it must have been his or her day off.  Bugga!  All up, a great day.  Probably should have started early but I didn't clock off from work until 23:10 the night before.
